Before the match, WVU Athletics said the Mountaineers were coming off a 1-1 draw with No. 11 South Carolina on Oct. 3. The announcement said junior Isaac Scheer scored his first goal of the season in that game, with junior Jacob Redenfors and graduate student Aurelien Cormier each recording an assist.

WVU Athletics reported that West Virginia entered the Old Dominion game with a 5-1-3 record and an eight-game unbeaten streak. The announcement listed the Mountaineers at No. 15 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, No. 20 in Top Drawer Soccer and No. 17 in College Soccer News, and No. 11 in the RPI.

The announcement said senior Pablo Pozos led West Virginia with four goals and 10 points, while sophomore Sammie Walker had two goals and two assists.
